Ledgeling

A tiny desktop companion that lives on your windows.

Ledgeling puts a small animated pet on your desktop. It perches on the edges of your open windows, climbs, hops, flies and wanders between them, and rides along when you drag a window around. It reads the real layout of your screen, so it never sits on an edge that's hidden behind another window.

Pets

Three species come bundled, and each moves differently:

- Budgie flies, so it ignores edges and takes air paths.

- Squirrel climbs, finding its way up and around your windows.

- Gecko walks the edges and hops short gaps.

It stays out of your way

- It nudges you only through body language: no popups, toasts, text or stolen focus. It backs off when you're gaming or watching media.

- It never reads window titles. It sees only which kind of app is in front, such as browser, editor or game, and discards the rest.

- The companion makes zero network calls: no telemetry, no crash reporting, no update checks. Networking is strictly opt-in, applies only to the assistant features, and is confined to a few isolated files.

- It's built to be light: under 0.5% CPU idle and under 80 MB RAM for one pet.

Make your own pet

Pets are pure data, with no scripting and no code. If you can draw sprites and edit JSON, you can make a climbing pet from two sprite strips and about 20 lines of JSON. A malicious pack can at worst look wrong.

Status: pre-alpha

Please read this before downloading:

- The Windows build has had limited testing.

- Linux has run only in CI (Xvfb and headless sway).

- Builds aren't signed yet, so your OS may warn you.

- Expect rough edges. Bug reports are very welcome.

The source is available under PolyForm Strict 1.0.0 with additional permissions. You can read it, but it isn't open source. See the license for what's allowed.
